Exmoor YFC End of year Article 08/09

Exmoor Young Farmers have had a very successful and fun year this year!
We have all taken part in many events such as sporting, farming related and anything else that is to be thought of at the time!

At many of these events our members have brought home cups and trophies to show for their hard work and great participation. A main highlight was receiving the Best Club in Somerset Trophy! Which all our club members have contributed to for taking part in almost everything and having an amazing time. Along with that, many members won cups and trophies for their efforts at County and West Group rally. These could be anything from cookery to sports.
The slightly more sporty people among us in our club have also competed competitively in sports such as netball, rounders, badminton and cricket. They have all done very well and enjoyed themselves a lot.
Another great event that we all took part in was the pantomime competition earlier this year. Our club performed the well known pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. It was so much fun for everyone dressing up and was a very good experience, especially being on stage in front of that many people!

However for those of our club more interested in other things we have organised many other social events this year... Our discos which we have run have been at North Molton and all have been attended well and a good night for all! And along with our discos we have been out ten pin bowling, for an example of the other fun socials we like to do. Those of our members that attended some balls this year found them all very entertaining too, with some interesting and embarrassing stories to tell!
The other obvious aspect to young farmers is the farming related events and activities.
Shearing and stock judging are some of the many things we also enjoy, like to learn and have a go at. And for those of Exmoor who are especially good took part in competitions and came home ecstatic with their results.
Exmoor have also taken part in and organised some very entertaining water sports some of which were held at Wimbleball Lake. Others included the Raft Race. This ran from Landacre Bridge to Withypool. It was extremely well attended and was great fun for all, either watching or attempting the race: Some using their creative skills by using flip-flops as the all important paddles!

A very rewarding achievement for some of our members, who we will of course feel safer with now, was completing and passing their First Aid course this year. At the beginning of our year we also entered a float into the Tiverton Carnival 2008. Our theme was the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and was great fun to be involved with for all our club members who helped with the making and decorating of the float and/or appearing on the float.

A lot of the Exmoor Young Farmers members have also contributed greatly to fund-raising for local charities, such as the cancer unit in Taunton by completing a ‘bed push’ from Hawkridge to Winsford!
Also our slightly more brainy members have competed at ‘Call my Bluff’ coming 1st and second and in junior ‘Public Speaking’ Competition they all did very well too!

After a fantastic year we are welcoming new members to join our club.
