Roe Deer
Roe Deer
Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a small slender deer which is the smallest of the Exmoor deer, (though unconfirmed sightings of the smaller Muntjack have been made). A very shy woodland deer, whose presence is usually given away by young trees being frayed, when the males scent mark their territorial boundaries by rubbing their antlers over the bark. The new fraying is often seen in April when the Roe begin to mate. Males have small upright antlers with generally no more than 3 points per antler.
