Country Sports on Exmoor
Some visitors take part in the traditional country pursuits of hunting, shooting and fishing: pursuits that date back to a time when it was necessary to supplement the diet by catching animals and fish.
- Hunting is still seen as a way of ontrolling pests as well as an energetic day out for some. There are several game shoots which are important for Exmoor’s economy. The sport is noisy and, although controlled, the vast numbers of introduced birds cause damage to woodland habitats and reduce the numbers of native species.
- Exmoor rivers are excellent for game fishing. Salmon and sea-trout are caught in the main rivers while there are brown trout in all the rivers.
- Still-water trout fishing takes place on the reservoirs at Wimbleball and Wistlandpound. All inland fishing is controlled by licences. Sea fishing from land and by boat is also popular.
West Somerset is well-known for the range and quality of its riding establishments. One of the great joys is that riding here can suit all levels of ability, from the outright beginner to the skilful and didicated equestrian. And of course there is the wonderful chance to ride through some of the most beautiful countryside there is. Always telephone your chosen stable to avoid disappointment. Remember that although you may be supplied with the equipment you will need, it pays to take stout footwear and clothing.
For the angler, West Somerset offers not only fine game fishing for salmon and sea trout but good coarse fishing and sea fishing. To fish on local rivers, national rod licences must be obtained from the Environment Agency, as well as permits from the owners of fishing rights. Most still water fisheries are covered by the agency's general licences, but owners' permits may be required in addition or in place of them. This includes some reservoirs owned by water companies. Permits can be obtained on site at larger reservoirs such as Wimbleball Lake.
Don't forget that fishing off stony beaches and rocky headlands can play havoc with your tackle. If you are after larger fish, you can hire a boat at Watchet, Minehead or Porlock Weir.
Minehead and District Sea Angling Club is a well-established local club whose members enjoy a varied annual fishing calendar of beach angling and deep sea boat fishing on a monthly basis. They cater for all ages and will give tuition to beginners. Participating anglers can win cups and trophies which are awarded annually. The majority of their competitions take place along the local coast and boat trips leave from Minehead Harbour. Why not join today?
