The Dark Skies of Exmoor
Exmoor has wonderful opportunities to see the night sky in all its glory. Because of the low population density there is relatively little light pollution and so you can see more stars than in many other places. Take ten minutes out of one evening to stare at the skies and see which planets you can spot. Exmoor is one of the best "dark skies" areas in England – free of the light pollution that blocks visibility – and May is one of the best times in the year for star-spotting. Head outdoors around 45 minutes after sunset for a good chance of seeing Mercury, along with Venus and Mars and Jupiter. One of the best ways to star spot is to camp in one of the more isolated campsites; try Halse Farm (halsefarm.co.uk), five miles from Dulverton and on the edge of the moor.
